Exception to my Not Real Political/Activisty Policy

I’ve talked before about SOPA.

This time I’m screaming about it. Via my friend Audry Taylor on her Facebook:

A TOTAL BLACKOUT is being threatened by AOL, Google, Facebook, eBay, PayPal, Twitter, Wikipedia, Yahoo and many more major companies if Congress is dumb enough to try and pass SOPA. Be prepared to say goodbye to everything you use, either temporarily out of protest — or possibly forever if SOPA passes. http://matadornetwork.com/change/google-amazon-facebook-may-shut-down-to-stop-sopa/

This blog is a WordPress blog, hosted through another company that hosts my website. My domain name is registered through another. THIS AFFECTS ME and will ultimately affect you as well. I use Google all the time for so many things. If you use Gmail, Yahoo mail, anything, chances are good you’re not going to even be able to access your email if this happens.

Something has to be done.

A quote from the above article:

According to the watchdog group Maplight, right now pro-SOPA contributions to Judiciary Committee members outweigh contributions from those opposed about 4 to 1.

As I said on Twitter, it’s a crying shame that in America law is made by those who can buy the most votes. Anyone who knows me knows I hate politics. I even wrote something about it once. It was called “Apathetic Isolationism – the Rant of the Disillusioned American.” I wrote it in 2004, so this political hatred of mine is nothing new.

Point being, stop SOPA. I’ve limited my concerns to things that I can do something about, and I’ve already done what I can to stop this idiocy. I’ve written my congressman (yeah, like he’ll care) and have posted info in various places where people might still see it and maybe pass it along.

And that’s all I can do. I’ll go make with the words now, and hopefully we’ll still have an internet by the time I get done with this novel.

Remember the 80s, when the Internet wasn’t an everyday thing? Want to go back to that? That’s what this bill is going to do. It’s going to bust technology back 25 years or more, and if that’s what you want to happen, do nothing. Let’s not even talk about the freedom of speech aspect. I have work to do.

Again. WOW. Vote for me?

Normally Google Alerts tells me about reviews and such, but sometimes it misses for whatever reason. It missed this one, so the email I got yesterday was a bit of a (nice) shock.

Not only did it contain a link to a stellar review and a shiny button with which to show it off, but it informed me that All Wounds had been nominated for Book of the Week on their site! From their mail [sic]:

Your story “All Wounds” was reviewed by us this week here: http://longandshortreviews.blogspot.com/2011/12/all-wounds-by-dina-james.html and is up for Book of the Week honor this weekend (voting runs from Saturday, December 10th through December 11th). We thought you might like to know. You can find the information here on Saturday:

http://www.longandshortreviews.com/LASR/index.htm

Wow. WOW, I say. So what happens if I win this nomination? Again, from their email:

The winning author gets a nifty button and the privilege of having their book or story featured at the top of the Long and Short Reviews home page the entire next week, as well as getting a custom made animated banner from Goddess Fish Promotions to publicize their review and the win!

That’s a pretty sweet deal. I like shiny banners and promo!

So if you liked All Wounds, would you mind heading over to the review site and voting for me? There’s no registration (that I saw) and it’s just one click on my name then one for the vote button! (You can also click to see the results once you’ve voted!)

Thank you, lovely friends and fans!

OMG I Did It

NaNo Winner Badge

50k in 30 Days

50k in 30 days. They’re not the best words in the world (in fact, they’re quite crap), and will probably never see the light of day, but I did it.

I can’t help but be just a little bit proud of this. I accomplished the goal I set and learned a lot about discipline.

Now I deserve a shot of tequila and have earned myself a nice dinner at one of my fave restaurants. For this is the reward I have promised myself.

I will probably never do this again. But I’ve done it.

I’ve even signed up with some friends for an unofficial continuation in December. 30k this time in 30 days. We’re using the hashtag #30in30 on Twitter if you want to join in!

I will now go collapse.

Dina’s Holiday Rant

All right. I’m starting to (yet again) see posts in various places about “keep Christ in Christmas” and “Jesus is the reason for the season,” so it’s clearly time once again for Dina’s Holiday Rant.

This was originally written/posted December 5, 2009 on my Livejournal. It’s still applicable, so I decided to dust it off, shamelessly copy and paste, and update it to post again. I think I might make it an annual thing.

Read at your peril. Feel free to repost/forward with credit to me as the author if you feel like it. Continue reading

Sithmas Approacheth – The Holiday Card Post

(I’m totally recycling last year’s post. Like I do with the holiday decorations!)

SITHMAS IS COMING! SITHMAS IS COMING!

Okay, yes…I’m one of those people who started humming Christmas songs back in October. I know, I know. But I really love the holidays. Halloween used to be my favorite holiday until I came out of my Goth closet and could dress how I wanted to every day of the year and not care about being seen as a freak (for the record, I was 25), but now Christmas is my favorite.

Thanksgiving, however, is not to be overlooked. I mean, a foodie like me ignore a holiday that’s all about FOOD? PIE? LOTS AND LOTS OF PIE?! (Not to mention leftover pie!!) Great. Now I’m hungry. And there are pies in the kitchen. I shouldn’t write about pie before breakfast….

Anyway, what was I writing about? I mean, before my stomach started doing the writing? Oh, yeah! The holiday spirit!

Okay, here’s the deal: I’m making my holiday card list.

Yes, you heard right. No, I’m not too early. It’s nearly Thanksgiving! I mean, by the time I get the list done and cards mailed, I’ll be right on time!

I am setting a deadline for you all, though. If you want to be on my holiday card list, post a comment on my website by Sunday, December 4th (don’t worry, these will be screened!) or e-mail dina [at] dinajames [dot] com with your snail mail addy, and I’ll send you a holiday card. If you got a card from me last year, you’re still on my list, but if you’ve moved, don’t want one, or otherwise changed your address, let me know! I keep the list for subsequent use year to year, but will remind you all yearly to send me any updates. I realize people move about and change names and such.

If you’ve won something from me or I’ve otherwise sent you something in the last year, your name has likely been added to the card list. If you want a card, let me know, because I have them printed up in small batches and need to know how many to order.

If you’re feeling in the holiday spirit yourself and would like to return the favor, here’s my address:

Dina James
P.O. Box 574
Astoria, OR 97103
USA

Happy Sithmas!

Dina's Sithmas Tree

My Sithmas Tree. It's a black tree with red lights and a Darth Vader nightlight for a topper.
